DJI has just released the new Mavic 3 Pro, an update to the relatively new Mavic 3. Following the release of the Mavic 3 (with one 4/3" camera and a separate 1/1.3" zoom camera), and the Mavic 3 Classic (eliminates the zoom camera but keeps the beautiful Hasselblad 4/3 main camera), DJI has added a new drone to the Mavic lineup, the Mavic 3 Pro.
With three cameras (4/3 Hasselblad, 1/1.3" medium zoom, & 1/2" telephoto zoom), the Mavic 3 Pro seems to be aiming to fill a niche of aerial photographers/videographers who appreciate the portability of the Mavic line but who want to ability to frame more cinematic shots with up to a 166mm focal length.
The ability to compress more of the image in a shot (making objects in the background seemingly larger in relation to the foreground) comes at the expense of field of view (FOV). While the main 4/3 Hasselblad camera boasts an 84° FOV, it has a 24mm focal length equivalent. The medium tele lens (1/1.3") can reach a 70mm focal length with a 35° FOV while the telephoto lens (1/2") hits 166mm but with a 15° FOV.
It will be interesting to see what creators make of these camera choices. On paper, I really like the medium telephoto camera's 70mm and 35° FOV specs but I wish it were combined with a 4/3 sensor. Hasselblad's main cameras on both the Mavic 2 Pro, the Mavic 3, and the Mavic 3 Pro are really what get videographers like me excited and I wish they could figure out a way to combine those different focal lengths on the one "good" camera. Zoom lens anyone? Perhaps they'll come out with a Mavic 3 Zoom? :D
